Thing / thingy — and also a hassle.
The word for anything you can’t or won’t name: *pásame esa vaina*. It also means a problem — *qué vaina* is "what a pain", and *esa vaina no funciona* is "that thing is broken". Shared with Venezuela and the Caribbean, used constantly.
Literally a sheath or pod. It became the all-purpose placeholder noun.
Mild, but informal. Not crude in Colombia, though it lands harder in some other countries.
Reading a definition isn't the same as saying it to someone. Lingo Kaiava is a voice tutor set to Colombian Spanish — it uses vaina the way locals do, corrects you in the moment, and never "fixes" the way real people actually talk into textbook Colombian Spanish.
