How it's actually used

Vaina replaces any noun. It also covers situations ("qué vaina tan rara" = what a weird situation) and frustration ("¡qué vaina!" = damn). Venezuelans and Dominicans use it constantly; Colombians on the coast do too.

Where it comes from

Literally a sheath or pod. It became the catch-all for any object whose name you cannot be bothered to say.
