Learn European Portuguese — the Portugal Kind, Not Brazilian
If you're moving to Lisbon, applying for residency, or your family is from Portugal, you've probably discovered the frustrating truth: almost every popular app teaches Brazilian Portuguese only. The vocabulary is different, the grammar is different, and the sound is completely different. Lingo Kaiava has a real Portugal mode — pick it once and the tutor teaches português europeu, with a European Portuguese voice.
What Makes European Portuguese Different
Grammar Brazilians Don't Use
- Tu with real conjugations — In Portugal, friends and family are tu: tu falas, tu comes, tu vives. Brazilian apps teach você for everyone, which sounds distant or oddly formal in Lisbon.
- Estou a fazer, not estou fazendo — Portugal says estou a estudar (I'm studying); Brazil says estou estudando. Use the gerund in Porto and you're instantly marked as learning from the wrong apps.
- Pronoun placement — Portugal: chamo-me Ana. Brazil: me chamo Ana. Small detail, dead giveaway.
Words That Change Country
- autocarro (bus) — Brazil says ônibus
- pequeno-almoço (breakfast) — Brazil says café da manhã
- comboio (train) — Brazil says trem
- casa de banho (bathroom) — Brazil says banheiro
- telemóvel (mobile phone) — Brazil says celular
- fixe (cool) — Brazil says legal
The Sound
European Portuguese swallows unstressed vowels — excelente comes out closer to xclent. That's why learners trained on Brazilian audio land in Lisbon and understand nothing. Training your ear on the right dialect from day one is half the battle.
Why This Matters for Residency & CIPLE
If you're headed for the CIPLE A2 exam (Portuguese citizenship / residency), the listening sections use European Portuguese. Practicing with Brazilian audio actively works against you. Kaiava's Portugal mode keeps the vocabulary, grammar, and voice on the European side consistently.
Learn European Portuguese with Lingo Kaiava
Pick Português and choose Portugal in the dialect picker. From then on:
- Voice-first practice: Speak out loud; Kaiava replies with a European Portuguese voice.
- Portugal grammar built in: The tutor drills tu conjugations and estar a + infinitivo — and corrects Brazilian forms if you slip into them.
- Portugal vocabulary: autocarro, pequeno-almoço, telemóvel — taught as the default, not a footnote.
- Memory: Kaiava remembers what trips you up and brings it back in review until it sticks.
