How it's actually used

The sound of mild letdown — plans cancelled, bad news, something unfair. It can also push back on something you do not believe, close to "come on". Short, very expressive, usually said alone.

Examples

Where it comes from

Uncertain, and strongly associated with Chicano and border Spanish before spreading inward.

Before you say it

Casual and regionally flavoured. Strong in Mexico City and the north, thinner in the south, and barely understood outside Mexico.

Now actually use it out loud

Reading a definition isn't the same as saying it to someone. Lingo Kaiava is a voice tutor set to Mexican Spanish — it uses chale the way locals do, corrects you in the moment, and never "fixes" the way real people actually talk into textbook Mexican Spanish.
