Order a tinto anywhere in Colombia and you get a small, sweet black coffee, often from a man with a thermos on the street. It is the national ritual. The polite way to ask is "¿me regala un tinto?"
From "tinto" meaning tinted or dyed — the dark tint of the water.
In Spain and most of Latin America, "vino tinto" is red wine and "un tinto" means exactly that. Order a tinto in Madrid and you get wine. In Bogotá you get coffee.
