Nostalgic — said the moment something brings a memory back.
Where English needs a sentence ("wow, that takes me back"), Japanese uses one adjective, said out loud as a reaction. Hearing an old song, tasting a childhood snack, seeing an old photo — 懐かしい. It is warm, not sad.
It describes your feeling, not the object. Japanese speakers say it about themselves; "that's nostalgic" is not quite the same move.
