Tereré is mate served ice cold with herbs, and in Paraguay's heat it is everywhere. It is shared from one guampa passed around a circle, which makes "tomar tereré" as much a social invitation as a drink.

Not the same as Argentine mate, which is hot. Confusing them in Asunción is a real mistake.
