Spanish Numbers 1-100: Complete Guide

Counting in Spanish is easier than you think. Here's everything from uno to cien.

Numbers are one of the first things you need in any language. Whether you're paying for coffee, telling time, or giving your phone number, you need to count. The good news: Spanish numbers are logical and pattern-based. Once you learn 1-20 and the tens, you can build every number up to 100.

Numbers 0-15

These are irregular — you just have to memorize them:

Numbers 16-19

These are built from "diez" (ten) + the number:

16dieciséisdiez + y + seis
17diecisietediez + y + siete
18dieciochodiez + y + ocho
19diecinuevediez + y + nueve

They're contractions: "diez y seis" became "dieciséis." Same for all four.

The Tens (20-90)

Building Numbers 21-29

Like 16-19, these are contractions of "veinte y":

Note: "veintiuno" changes to "veintiún" before a masculine noun: "veintiún años" (21 years).

Building Numbers 31-99

From 31 up, the pattern is simple: tens + y + units (written as three separate words):

The "y" (and) connects the tens and units. Simple pattern, applies to all numbers 31-99.

100 and Beyond

Rule: Use "cien" when you mean exactly 100. Use "ciento" when there's more after it: "ciento uno" (101), "ciento cincuenta" (150).

Regional Differences

Numbers are universal across Spanish dialects — "cincuenta" means 50 in every Spanish-speaking country. But there are some regional quirks:

Common Mistakes

1. "Cien" vs "Ciento""cien" = exactly 100. "ciento dos" = 102. If there's a number after it, use "ciento."

2. Gender with "uno""uno" becomes "un" before masculine nouns: "un perro" (one dog). It becomes "una" before feminine nouns: "una casa" (one house).

3. "Veintiuno" vs "veintiún" — Before a masculine noun, it's "veintiún libros" (21 books). Before a feminine noun, it's "veintiuna manzanas" (21 apples).

4. Writing as one word vs three — 16-19 and 21-29 are single words (dieciséis, veintidós). 31-99 are three words (treinta y dos).

How to Practice Numbers

Numbers are muscle memory. You learn them by using them — counting, giving prices, telling time, saying your age. The more you say them out loud, the faster they become automatic.

Lingo Kaiava lets you practice numbers in real conversation. Order food, ask for prices, tell stories — all in Spanish, all spoken. When you say "cincuenta" instead of "cinco," the AI corrects you naturally.
